Founded a decade ago by Alexander Prokhorov-Tolstoy, a renowned composer and artistic director, the Commonwealth Lyric Theater, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, has rapidly ascended from a small community organization to a beacon of operatic excellence. Originally, CLT set out to showcase Eastern European operas to Boston's discerning audiences.
The company has since broadened its repertoire, embracing Western classics from Mozart to Bizet and Sullivan, and earning accolades for blending opera stars from world’s top theaters like the Metropolitan Opera, Zurich Opera House, and La Scala with emerging local talent. This unique mix and authenticity has garnered the theater three first-place awards at the United States National Opera Association competitions.
At the heart of our mission is the Young Artist Program, empowering young singers to perform with seasoned professionals, fostering a multi-generational opera community.
Prokhorov-Tolstoy sums it up: "We're not just creating opera; we're creating a family within the opera community."
